Significance of Makar Sankranti

Significance of Makar Sankranti

Indian pundits and foreseers made detailed studies of the movement of globes in relation to the sun and the earth. There are twelve wheel signs that are constantly in stir. Consequently, the sun’s position varies from time to time according to a particular wheel. The transition of the sun from one wheel to another is known as Sankranti in Indian divination. There are twelve cycles, and thus twelve Sankranti, of which Makar Sankranti is the most important. Makar Sankranti occurs around 14 January every time, when the sun passes from the southern sphere to the northern sphere by moving from Sagittarius or dhanu Rashi to Capricorn or makar Rashi. The factual time of the transition is transitory and can not typically be viewed with the naked eye. Still, there’s a place, the notorious Sabarimala sanctum in Kerala, from where the auspicious transition of the sun can be seen indeed with the naked eye for many seconds. The exact duration of the movement of the sun’s transition is known as Makara Jyoti. Also, when the sun moves from the northern semicircle to the southern semicircle around mid-July, the transition is known as karkat Sankranti. From this day forward, the sun moves down from the earth, causing shorter days and downtime around the Indian key. The shorter days and softer sun shafts change the inner chemistry of both humans and nature. The period between these two Sankranti — karkat to makar — is known as dakshinayan. The sun remains below the horizon towards the South Pole in this period.

On Makar Sankranti, people observe a fast and worship the sun. In the evening, they eat sesame seeds or til in the form of laddus and rewards or other analogous confections.

Linseed has the power to

absorb inner negativities caused by the effect of downtime. After Makar Sankranti, the temperature on earth starts to gradually warm up and formerly again transforms the inner mortal chemistry and that of the trees and shops on earth. Makar Sankranti, thus, is an important event in the Hindu timetable that denotes planetary transition as well as change in mortal chemistry.
