Potting Mix

Potting Mix

Introduction

As the word itself stands, potting mix is the manure used for plants which are planted in pots, not in the ground.  A potting mix is required for the plants developed in containers as their needs are different from those in the ground. As all of us know, different plants need different soil mixes to grow in pots. Different potting mixes are developed to respond to their needs. To provide a healthy environment for potted plants to grow, the potting soil, which is also known as potting mix, comprises various ingredients like sphagnum, moss, bark, fertile, vermiculite, compost, or coir. A high-quality potting mix will be lighter-weight and fluffy to hold moisture. We see different types of mixes, from purpose blends to specialised mixes. Basic components included in potting soil are

  1. Organic plant or animal based materials
  2. In organic natural materials
  3. Fertilisers
  4. Other additives

Importance: We know that most plants need soil to survive; it supports , holds, and protects the roots. Taking soil from outside and using it in pots is not a good idea. So potting mix plays an important role in growing indoor plants. It’s important to change the plants’ potting mix every year or so. This can be done by re-potting which helps to add new nutrients to the soil. It loosens the roots a little to allow for better watering and creates space for new root growth, . It also checks for any damaged roots that might be snipped off.

The main functions of a potting mix

  1. Soil acts as a reservoir for moisture and nutrients around plants’ roots.
  2. It provides enough air in the soil. Usually, the plant roots have a hard time withstanding it.
  3. A soil mix needs to mix thoroughly around the roots of the plant and hold it in place so that it doesn’t blow over in the first wind.

Conclusion

Composting will undoubtedly be an essential part of producing a good potting mix. As this is done by us, we will gain experience in potting mix. The manpower inputs will likely decrease as more productive ways of operating will be discovered.
