Equipment:

  • Mallakhamb pole: A thick wooden pole made of teak or sheesham wood, about 2.6 meters (8.5 feet) in height and 55-60 centimeters (22-24 inches) in circumference.

             OR

  • Mallakhamb rope: A thick cotton rope that is vertically suspended, usually around 2.5 to 3 meters (8 to 10 feet) in height, with a diameter of about 35-40 millimeters.

Gameplay:

  • Mallakhamb is typically performed individually, but there are also group performances and competitions.
  • The performer (Mallakhamb player) wears a traditional costume that provides grip and support while executing the movements.
  • The player starts by climbing up the pole or rope using various techniques and grips.
  • Once on top, the player performs a variety of poses and movements, showcasing their strength, flexibility, and balance.
  • The player may demonstrate various yoga-like poses, gymnastic movements, and acrobatic tricks while maintaining control and balance on the pole or rope.
  • Points are awarded based on the difficulty and execution of the performed movements.
  • The performance is accompanied by live music played on traditional Indian instruments like the mridangam, harmonium, and flute, adding to the overall cultural experience.

Winning:

Mallakhamb is not a competitive sport in the conventional sense, and there are no specific winners or losers. The focus is on the artistry and skill of the performer and the preservation of the traditional Indian cultural heritage.
