Hindustani Music

Hindustani music evolved during the Vedic era. Dhrupad, Khayal, Tarana, Thumri, Dadra, and Gazals are the main vocal forms in Hindustani music. This music had its origins in the 13th and 14th centuries. As previously stated, Hindustani classical music is influenced by the Vedic stage, as well as musical traditions and Persian elements. The Raga system is at the heart of Hindustani classical music. Let’s know what is raga briefly. Raga, also spelled rag or ragam, is a set of notes arranged in ascending and descending pitches.

There are seven main pitches: 

SA shadaj (षड्ज)

RI rishabh (ऋषभ)

GA gandhar (गान्धार)

MA madhyam (मध्यम)

PA pancham (पञ्चम)

DHA dhaivat (धैवत)

NI nishad (निषाद)

Raaga has some note combinations that are always sung together. Hindustani classical music is primarily performed orally. Hindustani music comes in a variety of styles, such as: Khayal, Ghazal, Dhrupad, Dhamma, Tarana, and Thumri are some of the terms used. 

Hindustani music has a long history of improvisation. Tansen was Akbar’s court musician and a Hindustani singer who primarily performed in the Dhrupad style alongside contemporary musicians. Sadarang and Adarang were strong supporters of Khayal singing.  Adarang were strong supporters of Khayal singing. Ragas are gender-based in Hindustani classical music. Bhimsen Joshi, Nagraj Havaldar, Kishori Amonkar, Ulhas Kashalkar, Ajoy Chakraborty, Prabakar Karekar, Pandit Jasraj, Rashid Khan, Aslam Khan, Shruti Sadolikar, Chandrasekhar Swami, and Mashkoor Ali Khan are among the contemporary vocalists in India. Ghazal is a form of Hindustani classical music. Ghazal is an essential part of Hindustani Classical music. Ghulam Ali, Jagjit Singh, Mehndi Hassan, and Pankaj Udhas are some well-known Ghazal singers. They choose love, joy, and piety as their themes.
