Carnatic Music

Purandhar Das is regarded as the founder of Carnatic music because he established the fundamentals of the genre. He popularized this music, and his contributions to Carnatic music are flawless. Carnatic music is a Sanskrit term that translates to Karnataka Sangitam, which means “traditional” or codified music. Many scholars use this music for lyrics in Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam, in addition to Sanskrit and Tamil. It is also known as Carnatic music and South Indian popular music because it originated in Karnataka.

It is performed in a gayaki style and focuses on religious themes influenced by the Bhakti movement of the 15th and 16th centuries. Swaras arose from the sounds of birds and animals. Carnatic music compositions were sung in 3 to 7 note intervals. Deities, specifically devas and devis, inspired this music. Traditionally, music was taught through the Gurukul system, in which students studied music alongside the gurus in ashrams.

Carnatic music has evolved over three centuries.
